The Assessment of Selective Lumbar Radiculography and Block

Selective lumbar radiculography and block are cosidered to be a beneficial examination for detecting lumber root lesions. We studied the advantages and limitations of the procedure both in the operatively and conservatively treated cases. We carried out selective lumbar radiculography and block for 52 patients from January to September, 1987, and 50 of them were studied. 15 patients were treated operatively after selective radiculography. It was useful for detecting the level of main root lesion in multiple disc degeneration, extraforaminal abnormality, for finding compressed dorsal root ganglion in intraforaminal region and deciding the area to decompress in malalignment spine which needs realignment and stabilization. 35 patients were treated conservatively and 15 of them were relieved from sciatica or claudication for relatively a long time.Consequently, selective radiculography and block are considered greatly effective in the aged above 70 years old who have suffered from chronic degenerative disease. The patients whose dorsal root ganglion is clearly recognized in selective radiculography have the tendency of good response to block by improving blood flow of the dorsal root ganglion.
