Rate of mortality and functional prognosis after fracture of the hip.

• We reviewed the records of 94 patients who had fracture of the unilateral hip. The average age of the patients was 78.0 years. The rate of mortality one year after the fracture was 10.2per cent, and three years after fracture was 30.7per cent for the total group. The standard mortality rate (SMR) was 1.22 at one year, 1.10 at three years and 0.84 at five years. The SMR of trochanteric fracture was higher than the SMR of femoral neck fracture. The rate of mortality was higher for high-abirith for gate group than for low-abirith for gate group. The results suggest that there is a relationship between mortality and functional prognosis.
