An anatomical study for correlation between arthritis of the first CM joint and Heberden's nodes.

We observed macerated carpal bones and studied the correlation between arthritis of the first CM joint and Heberden's Nodes for the purpose of detecting the risk factor for arthritis of the first CM joint.Fifty cadavers (thirty-eight male and twelve female, average age 62.0 years) were studied. Degeneration of the Trapezium and distal phalanx were obsered macroscopically and classified by the size of the oseteophytes.Coefficient of corellation between arthritis of the first CM joint and Heberden's Nodes was 0.35 in males and 0.69 in females. These results indicated a close correlation of the two types of degeneration in female. It seemed to imply that the cause of artritis of the first CM joint was not only due to morphology but also the general constitution of the patients as in the case of Heberden's Nodes.
