It is known that the denervated muscle will be reinnervated by direct neurotization. But the process of direct neurotization is not yet clarified. The purpose of this experiment is to clarify the process of direct neurotization by the method of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) after the cross nerve implantation.67 rats were used in this experimental study. The left tibial nerve was removed and then the left common peroneal nerve was cut and the proximal stump was embedded into the denervated gastrocnemius muscle. From immediately to six months after the nerve implantation, HRP was injected to both gastrocnemius muscles. The number of labeled cells were counted in each period.The labeled cells of affected side revealed as same distribution as that of normal tibialis anterior muscle. This means that the denervated gastrocnemius muscle was reinnervated by the implanted common peroneal nerve.There were observed a few labeled cells in two weeks after the neurotization, and they increased a significant level in three weeks. The M-wave could be evoked in three weeks after the neurotizationThese results showed that the reinnervation of the implanted nerve occurred in three weeks after the neurotization
