To investigate the cause of the femoral head lesions such as osteonecrosis and ossification disturbance in growing spontaneously hypertensive rats, we observed the blood supply to the femoral capital epiphysis using the specimens of the femurs treated with clearing method (Spalteholz). Superior retinacular arteries branched off before entering the femoral heads. No abnormalities were seen in the blood vessels there. The segmental stricture of the arteries appeared frequently around the cartilagenous canal within the femoral heads. There were also abnormalities in the femoral capital epiphysis of a small number of spontaneously hypertensive tats, suggesting osteonecrosis or ossification disturbance. The present study indicated that the occlusion of superior retinacular vessels would not occur outside of the femoral heads.
