Roentgenographic Bone Changes after Reconstruction with Kozt Modular Reconstruction System for Malignant Bone Tumor Surgery.

Kozt Modular Reconstruction System is a modular prosthesis designed for treatment of maligant bone tumors. Since 1986 we have used this type prosthesis for 13 patients with malignant bone tumors (6 osteogenic sarcomas, 1 Ewing's sarcoma, 1 myeloma, 5 metastatic bone tumors) We analysed roentgenographic changes of bone adjacent to the prosthesis. Follow-up ranged from three months to four years, with a median of 20 months. Atrophy and periosteal resorption due to stress shielding adjacent to the anchorage piece occurred in about 80% cases. Porosity surrounding the tibial prosthesis occurred in about 50% within one year postoperatively. Stress shielding should be produced due to transfixing screws and one-point press fitting at the tip of the prosthesis.
