A Case Report of Synovial Osteochondromatosis of the Hip.

We experienced a case of synovial osteochondromatosis of the hip. A 55-year-old female presented to our hospital complaining of left hip joint pain on walking of three years duration. On examination her range of hip motion was limited. Roentgenograms showed no remarkable change except osteoporosis of the hip Magnetic resonance imaging showed nothing of note. And, radioisotope image showed a mild increase in the uptake in the femoral head. We followed this patient as an idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip. Calcification on roentgenograms appeared five years after onset. On arthrographic examination, many calcified nadules were shown in the capsule. Surgery was performed and many free bodies and hypertrophic synovium with partial chondromatosis metaplasia were observed. Cartilage of both the femoral head and acetabular surfaces were intact. We reflected that arthrography should be done early in the patient who complains of coxalgia, limitation of hip motion and osteoporosis.
