The influence of yarn structure on the cross-sectional swelling of twisted yarn when wetted has been studied with the following results obtained on viscose rayon, acetate, silk, nylon and Terylenepolyester yarns :<BR>1) The cross-sectional area of nylon and Terylene twisted yarn does not swell at all when wetted, that of acetate swells slightly but is not affected by twist. The cross-sectional area of viscose rayon and silk swells considerably and is affected by twist, i, e., the degree of swelling decreases an increase in yarn twist.<BR>2) The degree of cross-sectional swelling S for viscose rayon varies with yarn count even with the same number of twists. However, when S is plotted against yarn compactness, it lies close to a definite curve independently of yarn count or the number of twists, showing that S can be expressed as a function of yarn compactness.<BR>3) Since yarn compactness depends on the transverse compression σ<SUB>cn</SUB> upon the neutral layer formed in the yarn at the time of twisting, S can be related to σ<SUB>en</SUB>, where σ<SUB>en</SUB> is approximately a function of filament strain ε<SUB>R</SUB> of the outermost layer. In this way, the following empirical formula for S can be derived : <BR>S=S<SUB>0</SUB> ε<SUB>R0</SUB> / ε<SUB>R</SUB> <BR> where S<SUB>0</SUB> is the degree of cross-sectional swelling (0, 67 for Viscose fiber), and ε<SUB>R0</SUB> is an experimental constant (0.056),
