In analyzing the mechanical properties of twisted yarns, the fundamental assumption is that they have an ideal helical structure. On this assumption, the tensile strains of component filaments can be readily calculated from their geometrical relations.
In this report, tensile strains of component filaments in actual twisted yarns have been measured and compared with theoretical values, and the applicability of the above-assumption to the calculation of strains of component filaments mentioned has been examined. Results obtained are as follows:
1) When the yarn is twisted in a fixed length or under constant tension, the assumption of helical structure can be applied to the calculation of strains of component filaments except for the inside region of neutral layer.
2) Filament in the inner region of neutral layer, formed when twisted under constant tension, buckle and are not purely compressed axially. Therefore, the assumption cannot be applied to this region.
