An automatic system to control woolen cards has been analyzed by the linear feedback theory and the statistical method with the following results :<BR> (1) The characteristics of the card can be described by the transfer function<BR> -e <SUP>-12s</SUP> /1+12<SUP>s</SUP> % change in yarn weight / % change in doffer speed<BR> (2) The noise accompanying the optical detection of web thickness cannot be ignored and seriously affects the results of control.<BR> (3) Experimental results and a theoretical analysis have shown that automatic control reduces yarn weight variations in wave length in excess of 100 meters.<BR> Standard deviation of yarn weight obtained from cutting the yarn into 64 ends 2 meters long can be reduced to<BR> σ=2%<BR> by automatic control.<BR> 4) Statistical determination of the noise level has been found to be useful for analyzing automatically controlled textile machines.
