The automatic evening device of the HMG Etrich Type Autochain gill of the Hansatische Motoren Gesellschaft is intended to attenuate weight variations in carded slivers. The authors has analyzed this device with special attention paid to the memory unit in an effort to obtain the ratio of attenuation as a function of wave lergth. Results :
1) When sliver weight variations have a period equal to or less than twice the predetermined "memory time" of the delay time relay, the evening device does not respond precisely to the weight variations but shows sporadic charges in the front-roll speed per two or three cycles of weight variation. Therefore, the evening device does not atteruate weight variations whose period is less than the value mentioned above.
2) The dead zone in limit switches increases the effective memory time in handling low frequency weight variations. With to dead zone, a constant memory time can be realized for medium frequencies and lower. In every case, however, the evening device is highly useful for reducing long-term weight variations.
