When wool is fed entermittently to a worsted card with an automatic scalepan, a sinusoidal change appears in the sliver weight. Several of these slivers with the sinusoidal weight variations are combined in a balling head to form a thick sliver with a complicated weight voriation. This report investigates, first, how the weight of the combined sliver entering the balling bead varies. Next an automatic sliver-weight control device based on the open loop principle is constructed and experimentally studied. The results obtained are:
(1) Due to the slight variations in the operating intervals of automatic scalepans, the eight of the combined sliver entering the balling head shows a modulated wave form, which is expressed as:
A(t)sin{w0t+θ(t)}
where:
X(t):Weight variation of the combined sliver,
ω0: Mean operating interval of scalepans,
A(t): Amplitude,
θ(t): Phase angle,
The exact forms of A(t) and θ(t) depend on the relative positions of cards and the initial phase of each scalepan.
(2) The automatic sliver-weight control device here developed is capable of eliminating not only sliver-weight variations (the wave length of which is more than 2 meters), but also most of the long-term variations in sliver weight caused by the operation of scalepans and moisture variations.
