Previously, some differences were found between the fatty acid composition of the oil obtained from the matured and the immatured castor beans and the five unidentified materials (A, B, C, D and E) were detected by gas chromatography of the latter. In this study, the change of the fatty acid composition of the oil in the immatured beans was traced during their development, after the immatured beans were grouped into the four stages following their maturing period, as I was in 12 days after flowering, lI was on 12 days, III was on 14 days, IV was on 16 days, and V was on 70 days. Coincidently the nature of the materials was investigated. The results obtained were as follows: (1) In the neutral oil of the immatured beans, there was a marked rise in ricinoleic acid content of the oil (from 24.3 to 76.4%) during the developing period I_??_IV, while the falls in C16:0, C18:2, and C18:3 fatty acid contents of the oil (from 20.4 to 2.4%, from 20.5 to 6.2%, and from 14.1 to 2.2%, respectively) were observed during the same period. The content of material C was decreased from 11.8 to 1.8% during the same period. (2) In the free fatty acid of the oil in the immatured beans, there was a slight rise in ricinoleic acid content (from 61.5 to 78.1%) during the developing period I_??_IV. The contents of C16:0, C18:2, and C18:3 fatty acid were not so high as compared with those of the neutral oil in the early developing stage and no significant changes of their contents were observed during the period I_??_IV. The materials C and D were reached to the maximum contents at developing periods III and IV, and the materials D and E were principaly found only in the free fatty acid fraction of the oil. (3) The unidentified materials were separated by silicic acid thin-layer chromatography from the oil and were identified by gas chromatography after some chemical treatments. The materials A, B, and C were expected as C16, C14, and C12 hydroxy fatty acid, respectively and the material D and E were assumed to be unstable hydroxy compounds.
