Morphometrical studies on structural alterations of gastric glands induced in rat by repeated administration of human bile.

The effects of human bile on gastric glandular structures were studied using rats. Human bile (Meulengracht 500-800 and 60-80) was repeatedly administered to rats once a week using a stomach tube for 10 weeks and the animals were sacrificed. Alterations of gastric glandular structures were investigated histologically and morphometrically using sections stained by hematoxylin-eosin and Concanavalin A paradoxical stains. In the fundic mucosa, elongation of glands, foveolae and of mucous neck cell zone and shortening of the glandular portion of glands were observed. Extents of these changes were more pronounced in the rats administrated with the bile with higher Meulengracht values. In the pyloric mucosa, hyperplasia of glandular portion of glands was observed. The change was also more pronounced in the rats administered with the bile with higher Meulengracht values. It was found that these changes were similar to those observed in background mucosa of rats with gastric carcinoma induced by ENNG.
