In order to clarify the factors influencing performance in reading aloud single Kanji and Kana letters in a case of pure alexia, longitudinal analysis was performed. Following results were revealed. 1 ; In both acute and chronic phase (one and 6 months after CVA), Kana was to be easier to read than Kanji, when frequency and strokes of Kanji was not controlled. 2; When frequency and strokes of Kanji was controlled in acute phase, there was no difference between Kanji of high frequency-a few strokes and Kana, but in chronic phase, there was no difference between all Kanji of high frequency and Kana. 3; The factor of greatest influence on reading performance of Kanji was frequency. The effects of strokes on that performance was interactive with frequency. 4 ; In Kana on reading performance, there was no effect of strokes in both acute and chronic phase.
