Separation of arsenic in iron and steels with chloroform extraction as arsenous trichloride from hydrochloric and perchloric acid solution has been investigated. Preceding the extraction, arsenic(V) and iron(III) should be reduced to arsenic(III) and iron(II) respectively, whereby stannous chloride with titanous trichloride is recommended as a reducing agent.<BR>The extracted arsenic(III) in chloroform is backextracted into water, and it is determined by a conventional molybdenum heteropoly blue spectrophotometry. The method was successfully applied to determine a small amount of arsenic in iron and steels of all types and was especially advantageous for high alloy steels.
