Organic acids from left ventricle (LV), papillary muscle (PM) and right auricle (RA) of hearts from patients with valvular heart diseases, were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and compared. Peaks of 2-deoxytetronate and dideoxypentonate were generally small, smallest in PM and largest in LV. Peaks of 3-deoxy-2-C-(hydroxymethyl) tetronate, 3-deoxyerythropentonate and 3-deoxy-2-C-(hydroxymethyl) erythropentonate were, however, comparatively large. They were largest in RA and the smallest in PM. This work shows that deoxyaldonic acids are, generally, contained in small amounts in the human heart.
