Low anterior resection using a stapling device for rectal carcinoma: Experiences of cases.

Low anterior resection using a circular stapling device (end to end anastomosis using EEA or ILS : 42, technique of Goligher: 2, double stapling technique: 10) was performed in 54 patients with rectal carcinoma. A Complementary colostomy was not performed. In all cases, free margins of more than 20mm was secured. Anastomoses were at 5cm oral to the anal verge in average. Stapler-related technical complications occurred in 5 patients (8.5%), in which the anastomosis with hand sewing was redone in 3 patients. Clinical anastomotic leaks occurred in five patients (9.3%). No postoperative death was encountered. Follow-up has ranged from 3 to 96 months. During this period one anastomotic stricture and two local recurrences (4%) occurred. Most patients have an altered bowel habit, consisting of 4 to 5 small-volume bowel movements per day.
