Serological and immunohistochemical studies on sialyl Lewisx and sialyl Lewisa antigens in colorectal carcinoma.

Sialylated carbohydrate antigens, such as sialyl Lewisa and sialyl Lewisx, were evaluated serologically and immunohistochemically in colorectal carcinoma in order to elucidate the usefulness and specificity as a tumor-associated antigen. The percent positives of sialyl Lewisa and sialyl Lewisx in 63 patients with colorectal cancer were 30.2 % (19/63) and 23.8 (15/63) respectively. Expression of sialyl Lewisa and sialyl Lewisx indicated 88.1 % (37/42) and 19;0 % (8/42) in normal mucosa remote from cancer lesion, but 79.0 % (49/62) and 90.3 % (66/62) in carcinoma, respectively. These two carbohydrate antigens indicated the different spectrum in sera. It is suggested that sialyl Lewisa has high tumor-specificity compared with sialyl Lewisa, and combination assay of sialylated Lewisx, sialylated Lewisa and CEA may be useful in detecting many colorectal cancer patients.
