Factors influencing the results of surgery on the pilonidal sinus, with special reference to postoperative care.

To date, many surgeons have developed various procedures for surgery of the pilonidar sinus, and many reports have described the operative results. In this study, we examined sev-eral factors (mainly postoperative care) affecting the operative results. We have treated 41 patients with pilonidal sinus since 1963, and since 1968 we have actively adopted Goligher's method, performing the technique 35 times, including recurrent cases and reoperations. In 35 cases, we investigated the relationship between various factors (duration before suture removal, duration of bed rest, initial" evacuation, width of sample) and the operative results. Seven patients suffered opening of the wound, and we found that the period before suture removal slightly affected the operative results, whereas other factors had no influence.
