Clinical Study on Emergency Operative Cases with Colorectal Carcinoma.

54 emergency operative cases with colorectal carcinoma treated in our department between 1982 and 1991 were reviewed clinically and accounted for 6.0 % of 896 operative cases with colorectal cancer during the same period. 42 cases were operated on due to obstruction, 9 cases due to perforation and one case for bleeding. The remaining two cases were laparotomised after preoperative diagnosis of peritonitis attributed to inflammatory disease. In terms of location of carcinoma, the frequency of R in the 54 emergency cases was significantly lower than 842 elective operative cases. However, regarding histological staging of the resected cases, no significant difference was noted. One stage operations with primary anastomosis were performed mainly in right-sided colon cancer with obstruction. Two stage operations or Hartmann's procedure were usually employed in other cases. 6 cases died within 30 days after emergency operation. The survival rate of the 54 emergency cases was almost same as 896 elective cases. In resected cases and curable resected cases, no significant difference was noted in the survival rate.
