A trial of colorectal cancer screening by multivariate analysis of elements in blood parameters.

We investigated whether or not the multivariate analysis of routinely-examined blood parameters is effective and helpful for colorectal cancer screening. We searched for a variable blood parameters for the detect ing of colorectal cancer using the multivariate control chart method. It was subsequently shown that combinations of “CEA”, “Hb”, “Alb-α2-Glob” are effective for the distinction of colo-rectal cancer. With these three parameters we solved the distinctive expression of colorectal cancer by Mahalanobis generalized distance. Consequently if D2≥7.81 is positive, we regard it as colorectal cancer. The results of verification with this distinctive expression for colorectal cancer showed positive rates as follows. Colorectal cancer (including six cases-D2≥7.81, CEA<5) 66.1%, the healthy -4.1%, gastric cancer-36.1%, lung cancer -55.6%, the cases of barium enema study (regardless of cases of colorectal cancer) -34.0%. In other words, the positive rate of screening in the main group that is to say, the healthy group is 4.1%, the pseudo-negative one is 33.9%, and the pseudo-positive one is 34.0%, the percentage being equal to the results of testing for occult blood in the feces, and thus proving to be effective and helpful for screening. We suggest that it would be necessary to in future extend the main group for screening to the level of outpatients coming to our hospital.
