Angiographies of 18 resected specimens of rectal cancer were studied mainly on the depth of invasion and the other factors, such as location, size, tumor growth type and lymph node metastasis. Considering the above results, preoperative angiographies of 110 cases of rectal cancer were analyzed in three groups of superior rectal arterial branches depending on their distribution to the rectal wall. The primary branches of superior rectal artery revealed pathological findings in the cases of si·ai, s·a2*, the secondary branches in ss·a1* and the third branches in pm*. These results showed that the findings of superior rectal arterial branches in rectal cancer were consistent with the depth of cancer invasion. On the other hand, hypogastric angiographies in 50 cases of rectal cancer were usefull to assess the extent of carcinomatous infiltration in pelvis, especially in 39 lower rectal cancers. The irregularity of arteries were revealed in 100% of ai, 36% of a2 and 17% of a1. * The depth of cancer in vasion (si, s2, s1, ai, a2, a1, pm) was defined by the rules of Japanese Research Society for Cancer of Colon and Rectum.
