Conduction Block from Purkinje Fiber to Ventricular Muscle under Abnormal Conditions

Conduction block of cardiac impulses from the Purkinje fiber to the ordinary ventricular fiber was studied in the canine right ventricle under three abnormal conditions. First, the P-M delay was prolonged in the 2x hypertonic solution without any change of the conduction velocity of the Purkinje fiber. Complete P-M block was observed in the 3x hypertonic solution. Secondly, the P-M delay was prolonged in the anoxic solution after the initial shortening. Thirdly, around a certain extent of the necrotic focus of myocardium produced by cauterization, a small but definite prolongation of P-M delay was observable without changes of excitation arrival time at the Purkinje fibers and of their action potentials. From the results mentioned above, the clinical significance of P-M block was evaluated.
