Several experiments on the L experiments growl.h prornotion of the tea shoot with gibberellin were performed during all plucking seasons in 1958.
The gibberellin spraying on the tea plant caused a considerable growth stimulation of young shoot, but the effect on the number of leaves, weight of shoot and yield did not noticed. The tea shoot sprayed with gibberellin developed longer internodes and slender stems and was fragile in plucking.
It seemed that the optimum concentration of gibberellin was in the range from 50 to 100 p.p.m. When compared the effect of 50 p.p. m. spraying with 500 p.p.m. in the first crop and 50 p.p.m. with 100 p.p.m. in the third crop, the latters seemed to be somewhat better, but the difference was not significant.
In the experiments, the gibberellin spraying were repeated 3 to 9 times during 29 days in the first season, 3 to 7 times during 27 days in the second, but it was supposed that 2 or 3 successive sprayings, would be sufficiently effective unless the buds would develop too longer.
An addition of urea in the gibberellin solution resulted in the increase of yield (P+3L) and stem length of the second crop, but the effect in the first crop did not observed and was not always desirable for chemical components in the tea leaves.
The gibberellin treatment decreased the chlorophyll conitent in the tea leaves, the color of tea, however, was not distinguished between the treated and untreated. Further the reducing tendency caused by gibberellin was noticed on total nitrogen and caffeine content but not on tannin.
By sensory tasting, the qualities of tea (Sentya) manufactured from the gibberellin sprayed leaves were not different from those of not sprayed ones, in spite of the lower content of chemical components of the latter leaves.
