The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether dityrosine and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) were useful as biomarkers for monitoring the development of acetaminophen-induced liver injury. Dityrosine immunoexpression in livers and plasma AOPP concentration were examined up to 24 hr post-acetaminophen injection in rats. Histopathologically, acetaminophen induced liver injury 3 hr after injection, and these histopathological changes were more severe time-dependently. At 3 – 24 hr, dityrosine was immunostained in the cytoplasm of damaged hepatocytes. The extent of dityrosine immunostaining in hepatic tissue and the plasma AOPP concentration were markedly increased at 6, 12 and 24 hr. These results suggest that dityrosine and AOPP expressions were useful biomarkers for monitoring the development of acetaminophen-induced liver injury.
