The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the combined effect of personnel protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on physiological responses both in neutral and hot environments, and to analyses subjective perceptions from subjects who used different types of SCBA in terms of different weight (light weight and heavy weight) and different shoulder straps. Eight male subjects underwent treadmill exercise under the four fire-kit conditions: firefighter protective clothing only (Control), PC + 11 kg SCBA with an old strap (Type A), PC + 6.4 kg SCBA with the old strap (Type B), and PC + 6.4 kg SCBA with a new strap (Type C), at the air temperatures of 22-C (neutral) and 32-C (hot environment). The results showed that in partial, the weight of PPE including the SCBA gave a significant effect on the physiological indicators, especially when they were used at hot air temperature. Using Type-C at that condition lowered oxygen consumption up to 15% and suppress heart rate approximately by 10%. Time lag of Tre was shorter at neutral temperature but there was no evidence found that T1,, were significantly influenced by Ta or PPE type. The use of Type-C has a significant benefit to the PSt and the discomfort sensation due to the muscle fatigue at several body parts was minimized when Type-C was used.
