Psychotherapy develops as a personal relationship primarily between the therapist and client. Communication obviously has a profound influence on the development of that relationship. Through communication, the therapist gains deeper understanding of the client, and this enables the therapist to offer appropriate assistance to the client. This results in improvement in the client's psychological state. Regardless of the therapeutic theory, psychotherapy is based on a reliable therapist-client relationship that can only be achieved through keen communication. As to methods of communication, both verbal and non-verbal communication are acceptable. Basically, psychotherapy involves a conversation between the therapist and client, i.e. verbal communication. However, communication through language is not suitable in some instances. Communication through mediation such as play therapy is often attempted, especially for children who have difficulty expressing their feelings through language. Even for verbally mature adults, non-verbal expressions such as sandplay or drawing are used in certain circumstances. These non-verbal expressions maintain and develop the relationship between the therapist and client. In spite of its importance, few studies have discussed the connection between non-verbal mediation and the therapist-client relationship. Therefore, this paper analyzes the characteristics and significance of communication through non-verbal mediation with reference to our previous studies on play therapy , expression therapy , and sandplay therapy. Furthermore, the current status of research on the importance of non-verbal mediation to the development of the therapist-client relationship is also described.
