In this study, marriage is examined from the viewpoint of psychological experience, especially with regard to the choice of spouse and the individuation process. The choice of spouse is influenced mostly by unconscious selection, i.e., the instinctive selection. Although, as is obvious, sufficient conscious consideration is required to make such a choice, it is the instinctive selection that is mostly responsible for the happy collective marriage. In reality, the instinctive selection is distorted by the strong ties and unconscious bonds that individuals share with their parents, institutional demands, and incorrect education. Strong ties with parents sometimes make children adhere to the old lifestyle of their parents. Moreover, the unconscious bonds with parents force children to modify their unique instinctive selection. Further, incorrect education results in the overestimation of the Persona. After marriage, if one partner feels contained in the marriage, but the other cannot feel contained, then the latter will inevitably seek a more suitable partner outside the marriage. The closer the relationship in the marriage becomes, the more anima/animus is projected on the partner; this makes the married relationship more complex and quite often leads to confusion. Moreover, there are considerable differences in the expectations of married partners with regard to sexual intimacy. In order to have a mature relationship in a marriage, both partners need to re-collect their own projections. However, re-collection is not always easy and is usually accompanied with troubles, suffering, and conflict. Regardless of this, these experiences are inevitable in the individuation process in a marriage.
