This article studies the personal develpmental process for a "child" in relation to its "mother" from the viewpoint of analytical psychology. This "child" is not limited to an actual child but also includes the inner child of adults. A child develops a mother complex while going through the "mother realm." The mother complex is affected by the "archetpal" mother as well as by the "actual" mother. In the mother realm, impulses for inner development take the form of a libido such as the "child-god." In the field of imagination, the birth of a hero leads to conscious development. However, the development of consciousness stimulates unconscious activities and brings about the regression and fixation of the libido. This gives rise to the "fear of life" and could lead to the "puer aeternus(eternal youth)" archtype. Initiation rites and myths spur a regressed libido that incestuously clings to the mother, giving a child an "adult persona" and spiritualizes the libido through the symbolic hero's achievements. In these processes, a symbolic attitude that engages in creative imagination and symblolic ideas evokes the transcendent function of symbols, leading to true personal transformation and growth.
