This study from a Jungian psychological viewpoint deals with the psychological meaning and role of "father," and especially for sons. The introjected father image has four meanings for his son: (1) a model of social and cultural role, (2) an embodiment of the individual and social authority, (3) a prompter of the social ideal and value based on the collective conscious, (4) a stimulator of psychosexual development. These father meanings encourage the son (1) to acquire an appropriate Persona for outer adaptation, (2) to develop an ego sufficient to accommodate outer and inner requirements, (3) to receive and participate in the collective conscious, (4) to establish a sexual identity. While traditional ritual and ceremony is rapidly disappearing in modern Japanese society, the individual father is charged with the duty and task of encouraging his son come to become a responsible adult who can succeed in social culture.
