The psychological development of a child is strongly influenced by his/her father and his image. This study particularly deals with the psychological meanings of father and the images of an archetypal father for daughters, from the viewpoint of the Jungian psychology. The image of an actual (external) father is mixed with those of an archetypal father, which can be classi-fied into three typical types-positive father, negative father, and missing father. The more a personal father can humanize these archetypal images, the easier it is for his child to relate to them. The images of an internal father are also intermingled with those of the archetypal father, but he is alreadya part of the psyche of his child, namely, the psychological functions in a child. The image of the inner father is concerned with (1) the matter of authority, (2) the development of ideals and a value system, (3)the establishment of a sexual identity, and (4) the social and cultural roles. When the internal father is very negative, missing, or even very positive, the child finds it difficult to cope with authority in an appropriate manner and is unable to develop the spiritual and religious values. Further, the child is unable to attain sexual maturity (particularly, female identity in the case of daughters), fails to develop social ability and thecapacity to function in his/her environment, and is unable to develop the courage for active commitment. This perspective with regard to the psychological aspects of a father will introduce new insights into thecases of mother-child bond and will offer clinical suggestions regarding these cases.
