Minoru Kuroda (1871-1922), who introduced the new theory of mathematics education in western countries to the society of mathematics education in Japan since 1913, wrote a new type of textbook for geometry of secondary schools in 1916. Kinnosuke Ogura (1885-1962) who was a pioneer of the historical study of mathematics education in Japan said that his textbook was influenced by mathematics education in western countries at the beginning of 20^<the> century. However little is known about what idea Kuroda picked up from mathematics education in western countries. The purpose of this paper is to examine what influence was exercised on Kuroda's textbook. The author compared Kuroda's textbook with "Meraner Vorschlage" (1905) that was a new mathematics curriculum made by "die Gesellschaft Duetscher Naturforscher and Arzte" in Germany. One of the findings that were obtained through the comparison is that both "Meraner Vorschlage" and Kuroda aimed at teaching the concept of function through teaching geometry. In conclusion, Kuroda's geometry textbook (1916) was strongly influenced by "Meraner Vorschlage".
