This study aims to look at the effect of vocabulary assistance in helping upper intermediate level students who have knowledge of Kanji understand lectures. In particular, it looks at the effect of giving students vocabulary training that includes oral reading and dictation, compared to the current practice of handing out vocabulary lists before a lecture. Groups that were provided with a vocabulary list with translation and then given a dictation test some time before the lecture on average scored higher in listening comprehension test than those that had just been given a vocabulary list at the beginning of the lecture. Through follow-up interviews and analyzing the content of the lecture, we also examined why some parts were difficult to comprehend.
