AbstractThis is the first study in the series which explores possibilities of utilizing "once upon a time" stories told by English speakers as a useful means to teach beginning level English learners in Japan. The former corpus-based studies by the author show that English vocabulary and phrases used by Japanese students are much less compared to students with other language backgrounds in its amount and variety. The studies also show that Japanese learners of English try to understand English based solely on grammatical rules. Considering the special features of language used in the stories, such as the repetitions centering on a clear story line, it is suggested that stories told are of great help for learning English. In this paper, a corpus of Three Little Pigs was analyzed using English language analysis tools in the light of its quantity and quality of words, phrases, and keywords. The results suggest that stories are rich in these areas, which learners are not usually exposed to or explained in English classrooms.
