The present study aims to investigate the development of interlanguage request production by Japanese learners of English using Standard Speaking Test corpus data. Former studies show that three factors, the degree of indirectness, frequency of strategy and use of modifications, are important factors which affect learners' production of requests. The use of those three factors by the learners was measured by frequency of use and concordance analyses and compared to that of native speakers of English. The results show that 1) learners used more direct requests than native speakers, and that Mid level learners used the most direct requests among the learners, 2) the lower the learners' proficiency level was, the less strategies were used, and 3) learners used question forms and the word "please" as modifications, while native speakers often used subjunctive mood. The learners started to use such simple internal modifications when they were in Low level and continued to use them even when they were at High level. Although high level learners used a similar degree of directness and frequency of strategies as native speakers, there were still some differences in the distribution of strategies used across the different situations between them.
