Pharmacognostical Studies of Genus Geranium (1) : Morphology of Epidermal Hairs of Japanese Species in Genus Geranium

Various types of hairs are observed on epidermis of genus Geranium plants. In this paper, morphology of epidermal hairs of calyx, peduncle and both surfaces of leaves of fifteen native taxa and one naturalized taxa collected in Japan were closely examined with an intention of finding a relationship between hair types and systematics. Plants of section Sylvatica, Mexicana and Robertiana were found to have patent long glandular hairs. All the plants in sect. Palustre were found to have glandular hairs. Adpressed hairs were found in sect. Sylvatica, Mexicana, Sibirica and Palustre. Patent hairs were on plants of every section except sect. Robertiana. According to these observations, those sixteen taxa may be divided into five groups, which agree with Knuth's system.
