Attempts were made at finding the best conditions for successful multiplication of Swertia japonica by planting a cutting. When the cuttings were planted in soil of suitable moisture conditions, the results were perfectly successful. Preferable time of cutting was found to be immediately after bolting. According to the results obtained by using phytotron, the cuttings planted and cultivated at 15° flowered 2 to 3 weeks earlier than those kept at 20° while at 25° no flower was given. All the cuttings died within 3 weeks when the temperature was kept at 30°. The parent plant of cutting rapidly branched after cutting; the number of flowers and the dry weight of the parent plant was approximately 2 times those of wild S. japonica, and the total yield of the plant derived from cuttings and the parent plant reached about 3.3 times that of wild plant. The contents of the bitter components, i.e. amarogentin, amaroswerin and swertiamarin in the plant derived from cuttings, parent plant and wild plant were, according to thin-layer chromato-densitometry analysis, about the same.
