Leaves of solanaceous plants containing tropine alkaloids, belonging to five genera, Atropa, Datura, Duboisia, Hyoscyamus and Scopolia, were examined from morphological and chemical point of view. The morphological characteristics were investigated using photo microscope and scanning electron microscope. The alkaloids were assayed by thinlayer chromatography (TLC) and gas chromatography (GLC). 1. Scopolia japonica has, if any, very few stomata on the upper side of the leaves. 2. S. japonica and Duboisia myoporoides had no non-glandular multicellular hairs. 3. Atropa belladonna and Hyoscyamus niger had smooth hairs having no protuberance on the surface of them. 4. Datura spp. had remarkable protuberance on the surface of hairs. Ten species belonging to Datura may be differentiated from each other according to such characteristics as non-glandular hairs and long type glandular hairs, and to alkaloid-assay by TLC and GLC (TABLE I).
