This investigation was concerned with meiotic chromosome behaviour of six F_1 hybrids obtained from crosses between seven varieties or forms belonging to the species Angelica acutiloba. Two out of six F_1 hybrids were obtained from crosses between varieties with the same karyotype, K(2n)=14V+8J. The other four F_1 hybrids were obtained from crosses between varieties or forms with either of the two different karyotypes, K(2n)=14V+8J and K(2n)=10V+12J. The latter four F_1 hybrids were confirmed easily in the early stage of growth by observation of the somatic chromosome complement. The former two F1 hybrids were as fertile as their parents, but the latter four F_1 hybrids were clearly less fertile than the former ones. Chromosome pairings at diakinesis and metaphase-I of PMC's in the F_1 hybrids are shown in TABLE I. On the basis of the cytological results above-mentioned it appears that genomes of the two groups of varieties used in this experiment still retain high pairing affinity, although divergent in chromosome structure. The spontaneous occurrence of chromosomal alterations, as in Angelica acutiloba var. acutiloba described in a previous paper, is considered to be a significant factor in the process of chromosome repatterning which results in the appearance of new geographical races, and eventually in varieties of Angelica with modified karyotypes.
