1. The karyotype analyses of five strains of Angelica anomala, collected in Honshu and Hokkaido, revealed intraspecific differentiation of polyploidy; three strains (Mt. Shari, Horoman and Mt. Nasu) were tetraploid (2n=44) and two strains (Mena and Mt. Daisen) were hexaploid (2n=66). The following two karyotypes of A. anomala were clearly discriminated. K(2n)=44=38V+4J^t_1+2J_2 K(2n)=66=58V+6J^t_1+2J_2 Basing on the karyotype analyses, it will be considered that the polyploid strains of A. anomala are not autopolyploid, but allopolyploid derived through the hybridization process between two or more related species. 2. The crossing experiment between A. anomala (4x and 6x) and A. acutiloba varieties failed to obtain the hybrid seeds. 3. The comparative analyses of cytogenetical and biochemical features with A. anomala and A. acutiloba varieties revealed that A. anomala had no concern with the formation of A. acutiloba var. sugiyamae. 4. The results so far obtained made the hypothesis conceivable that A. acutiloba var. sugiyamae would have been derived through the selection or the hybridization process among miscellaneous strains of A. acutiloba var. acutiloba or var. iwatensis.
