A Damage Analysis and Possible Services of IMS Network in Disaster Situations

This paper provides a preliminary analysis on the impact of logical as well as physical node failures to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). At a natural disaster such as an earthquake, IMS may not be able to provide normal services due to congestion and/or physical network unavailability. However as long as the infrastructure is not ruined completely, the network is available in some scale, and should make full use of the remaining resources to provide possible services or communications to users. The earthquake in March showed such dependability is crucial for future networks. This paper considers possible damages in the network, analyzes the impact on IMS network at each damage scale, and discusses possible reduced services in the corresponding situation by some modifications of IMS.
