Recent advancement in virtualization technology allows many virtual servers to be consolidated onto a single physical server. Several studies proved this to be an effective way to increase server utilization rate. Despite becoming popular and being used as a common practice in modern data centers, this technique has posted new challenges to data center management. Many fundamental management tasks such as virtual server scheduling, resources provisioning are still open research questions. In order to overcome these challenges, a monitoring system which can effectively monitor current system state and collect essential information is indispensable. This paper proposes some key information that is still missing from existing monitoring tools as well as several criteria a system designer should keep in mind when designing a monitoring system for server consolidation environment.
