Effects of geraniin on the liver in rats III : correlation between lipid accumulations and liver damage in CCl_4-treated rats

In this study, we studied the preventive effect of geraniin (Ger) from the herb of Geranium thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. on the accumulation of lipids and enhanced lipid peroxidation in the liver induced by CCl_4. Ger lowered these CCl_4-induced increased serum levels of GOT, GPT, total- and unconjugated-bilirubin, and lipid peroxide in rats, significantly, and prevented the CCl_4-induced increases of liver triglyceride and lipid peroxide levels, and decrease of SOD activuty, but not the increase of liver cholesterol level. Although Ger tended to increase the lipid contents in the liver of normal rats, pretreatment with Ger suppressed the accumulation of triglycerides and prevented lipid peroxidation in the liver of rats treated with CCl_4. Significant correlations were observed between the GOT level and liver lipid peroxide, GOT and liver SOD activity, GOT and liver triglyceride, liver lipid peroxide and SOD activity, and liver cholesterol and liver SOD activity. Ger enhanced recovery from CCl_4 induced liver damage by suppressing the enhancement of triglyceride and lipid peroxide, and keeping the SOD activity at normal level.
