In this paper we propose a new method to improve energy efficiency of the multi-hop MAC protocol in wireless sensor networks. This method uses carrier sensing technique to adapt to the traffic status of the network. By using carrier sense, nodes will decide whether to sleep or to keep awake depending on the existence of data. Simulation results showed that using new method can achieve higher energy efficiency while slightly increase latency.
