Broadband Design and Fabrication of Partially-Corporate Feed Double-Layer Waveguide Slot Antennas with Magnetic Wall Terminations due to Symmetrical Waveguide Connections

A double-layer partially-corporate waveguide to feed only two elements in series is introduced to a waveguide slot antenna to enhance the bandwidth of the gain. A PMC termination realized by symmetrical waveguide connection is newly proposed in the partially-corporate feed antenna. The termination distance in the last slot coupler with the PMC termination is reduced by half compared to the conventional PEC termination, and the degradation in sidelobe levels due to a large slot-free region is prevented. For the broadband design of a 16×16-element array with uniform excitation, the 4×4-element sub-array with the travelling-wave excitation and that with the standing-wave excitation are designed for comparison. The standing-wave fed 16×16-element antenna, which exhibits a larger bandwidth of reflection, is fabricated in the E-band by diffusion bonding of laminated thin copper plates which has advantages of high precision and high mass-productivity. As the measurement results, an antenna gain of 32.4 dBi and an antenna efficiency of 83.0% are achieved at the center frequency. The bandwidth of 1dB-down gain is 9.0%, where a broadband characteristic is achieved.
