As phase-modulated data-formats are gaining increasing importance in optical communication systems, restoring the signal phase has become a key issue for all-optical regeneration. The most feasible candidates for this purpose are phase sensitive amplifiers. However, intensity noise induces additional phase fluctuations through the fiber non-linearity. Hence, amplitude squeezing is also important to optimize performance in phase modulated systems. This paper investigates the efficiency of phase and/or intensity restoration in multi-span networks for minimizing the bit error rate.
