It is a well-known fact that the speed of the ship obtained from progressive speed trial is different from that of the navigating ship due to fouling, current, wind and wave effects, etc., with the same out-put. We made the following investifations on the DW75,000tons large oil tanker which is running between Japan and Persian gulf: (1) The speed lost by the ship due to each of fouling, ship age, current, wind and wave effects was obtained quantatively. (2) Using the results obtained from item (1), the charts were made so that estimating a voyage speed or annual mean speed of the said vessel can be made at anytime in the years to come. (3) Economics of ship operation was studied with consideration the speed lost by the ship due to effects as mentioned above and we further studied the relation between economics of ship operation and optimum docking intervals.
