Buckling/Plastic Collapse Behaviour of Stiffened Girders in Shear

A series of elastic-plastic large deflection FEM analyses is performed for plate girders predominantly in shear. Unstiffened, vertically stiffened and horizontally stiffened web plates are considered. The girders having perforated web plates are also considered. The fundamental features of buckling/plastic collapse behaviour are discussed with focuses on the ductility (the deformation capacity until the reduction of load-carrying capacity after reaching ultimate strength) of girders as well as the ultimate strength. It has been found that: (1) The ultimate shear strength of stiffened girders in ships is almost equal to the full yield strength of effective cross-section, i.e. ligament cross-section for perforated web and full cross-section for non-perforated web. (2) The influence of horizontal stiffeners on the ductility of girders with/without perforated web in shear is considerable whereas vertical stiffeners are less involved.
