Estimation of Ultimate Strength of Ship Bottom Plating Under Combined Biaxial Thrust and Lateral Pressure

The simplified method of estimation of the ultimate strength of ship bottom plating under combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure proposed by the authors is extended to the case of combined longitudinal thrust and lateral pressure. A series of elastoplastic large deflection FEM analyses is performed to clarify the influence of lateral pressure on the ultimate strength of a continuous plate. Based on the obtained results, a set of formulae has been derived for the estimation of the ultimate strength. Two fundamental collapse modes are considered; i.e. simply-supported mode and clamped mode. The ultimate strength is estimated taking the lower strength between those obtained for two assumed collapse modes. The derived formulae for estimation of the ultimate strength under combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure, and under combined longitudinal thrust and lateral pressure, are further extended to the case of combined biaxial thrust and lateral pressure. It is seen that the predicted strengths are in good agreement with the FEM results.
